I created this piece after my trip to Northern Italy in 1996. We stayed in Milan during the week and on the weekends took trips to Florence, Venice and Switzerland so in essence, Milan was my home away from home. Milan was also full of animals in architecture and the snake within the shield was their symbol. I spent a day in Venice, watching the woman of Burano (the island of lace), making Italian lace. I studied how they made their patterns and upon returning home, made my own piece of copper lace using the traditional Burano lace techniques.

Symbol of Milano was accepted into the Small Expressions Show through the Handweavers Guild of America in 1997 and was on exhibit at the Canton Museum of Art in Canton, Ohio. It was awarded an Honorable Mention. A picture of Symbol of Milano is published in the HGA’s Fall 1997 Shuttle Spindle & Dyepot magazine. A copy of the magazine is included with the purchase of Symbol of Milano.
